President Rodrigo Roa Duterte called on the people of Basilan to help in the efforts of bringing peace between the government and the Moro during his visit at the 104th Infantry Brigade base in Bgy. Tabiawan, Isabela City, Basilan.
“Ako po’y nasasaktan, kung nakikita ko ‘yung Moro fighter man o ‘yung sa gobyerno, because every Filipino life is precious. Ano man ang tingin ninyo sa sarili ninyo ngayon, sa tingin ko, kapatid ko kayo kaya sana magkaroon tayo ng pag-uusap na maganda at makuha natin ang kapayapaan,” the President said.
In the presence of Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police and Philippine Coast Guard officials and personnel, he continued his speech by addressing lawless groups, specifically the Abu Sayyaf Group, to be receptive to peace efforts and not to nurture hate.
“Ako ay nakiki-usap sa lahat, I am pleading for peace pati sa mga Abu Sayyaf. You have committed so many crimes, killing people unnecessarily… ang tropa ng gobyerno dadating dito nang dadating kasi may kini-kidnap, may pinapatay. Eh, reaksyon lang ng gobyerno ‘yan, walang iba… Alam mong nandiyan ang galit… may galit ka ‘eh. Kaya dun nakikinig sa galit,” he added.
President Duterte said that that he understands the plight of Muslims and indigenous groups in Mindanao, “I know the history of Mindanao, alam ko bilang isang kalahati na Maranao, na nauna ang Islam dito sa Mindanao. Yung Kristianismo came later but Islam was ahead by almost 100 years dito sa Mindanao. Alam natin ‘yan so we’re trying to correct. So alisin niyo yung galit, ‘yung hate, kasi hate will drive you to kill.”
“Sa mga kapatid kong Moro, kasi alam ko na napabayaan kayo. Alam ko ‘yan. At alam ko na-oppress kayo. That is why we’re having these talks, baka magkaroon tayo ng federalism, ‘yan ang hiningi ng mga leader ninyo… We have to maintain the republic, because to secede… hindi pwede ‘yan,” the President remarked when he brought up the topic of federalism.
President Duterte also commended the security forces of the government for a job well done in quelling a rebellion. “But you must remember that they’re our brothers and sisters… Do not nurture hate. Trabaho lang ‘yan,” reminded the Commander-in-Chief.
“Ayoko ng away, gusto ko mag-usap lang and to see a very prosperous Basilan,” he said in closing his statement.
President Duterte also led the distribution of family food packs to beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Basilan in the said event.
