Residents of Brgy. Bagumbong in the town of Barotac Nuevo, in the province of Iloilo were shocked when fire sparked while workers were drilling for water, to be used in rice field irrigation. The incident happened on May 13, 2016.
Ronnie Palermo, one of the workers, told local radio station, that the water became viscous and suddenly fire catches-it up when one of their colleagues lighted a cigarette.
Palermo said the let the fire ate-up the supposed oil, but local officials ordered them to contain the fire for fear that it would spread and become uncontrollable.
It was not clear whether the mineral was natural gas or oil, but many believed it was more on natural gas due to high flammability.
The Department of Energy said they already sent experts to examine the area.
The place where the phenomenon occurred is not known to have oil or gas deposits, but independent experts believe the deposit could be massive.
Last year, green water like “Mountain Dew” was also discovered near the site, but until now, DENR has yet to release the laboratory result.
